FOOD FOREST PROGRAMME
Food Forests - Planting Our Future, Now!
How Your School Involved Can Get Involved
Food Forests Ireland has a 3-Step Process:
• Engagement
• Education
• Empowerment
Food Forests Ireland provides resources to PRIMARY SCHOOLS to help students learn about food system resilience.
Our exciting plans are to extend the schools programme to 60 new schools throughout Ireland.
In this Systems Thinking designed programme, 5 topics are covered with a lesson plan for each topic provided to teachers via password protected access from Food Forests Ireland's website. All lessons centre around an easily managed 2m x 2m food forest planted in the school garden with the help of Food Forests Ireland's Schools Coordinator.
In March 2026, students from The Sacred Heart SECONDARY SCHOOL in Westport
joined FFI to learn about building food system resilience. The students' energy and enthusiasm were infectious as they designed their own food forests, before getting their hands into dirt adding ground cover plants to FFI's FoodForest@The Quay.
A food forest is a mini ecosystem providing students with a simple roadmap for developing interconnected ecosystems. This mimics a healthy world where everything is connected and those connections are understood and respected.
