Food Forests Ireland - Community Food Forest Programme
FFI's Community Education Programme provides a “Call To Action” for groups, promoting the use of sustainable practices to create vibrant spaces that strengthen local food systems, enhance biodiversity, and promote long-term environmental stewardship.
Circular by Nature, our Community Food Forest Programme empowers neighbourhoods through edible planting workshops in public spaces. Together, we design and plant food forests that build local food resilience and regenerate ecosystems.
Trialled between 2018 and 2025 on both the western and eastern seaboards, the Community Food Forest Programme was refined in 2025 as part of the award-winning Westport Food Forest pilot programme in collaboration with Trinity College Dublin School of Education and Westport Tidy Towns. It quickly scaled up along the Great Western Greenway and expanded to the wider island of Ireland through the Infrastructure Enabled Edible Landscape ( IEEL) on sites along the Royal Canal Greenway and The Barrow Way in Carlow.

Photos below are from the Infrastructure Enabled Edible Landscape (IEEL) rollout along the Royal Canal Greenway at TUD Blanchardstown, from Carlow town and from the Great Western Greenway. FFI co-ordinators Taragh, Roisin, Una and Niamh are working with local groups in these locales to design and plant their own food forests, teaching groups about food system resilience and in the process transforming public spaces into thriving edible landscapes.
